Seventeen

Joseph thudded to the ground beside Emily as the fire collapsed back into the earth. The clouds had cleared from the sky to reveal a blanket of stars that made him forget, just for a second, that Onaconah had betrayed him.

“Are you okay?” Emily asked him.

Her eyes were bright, her expression full of concern.

Tightening his stomach, he rolled to a sitting position, resting his arms on his knees.

“Joseph?”

“I’m okay,” he said. “You?”

She frowned. “I’m pissed as hell. My father traded his life for your humanity, and Onaconah screwed us over again. There’s a toasty place in hell for people like him.”

Joseph sighed. Emily’s anger was justified, and he understood how she was feeling. But for the first time since 1776, Joseph was free. And Onaconah would be dealt with.

“Aiyana has a strong following,” Joseph said. “She promised not challenge him only if he honored his deal. He didn’t.”

“What does that mean?” Emily asked. “Can she overthrow him? Will there be a fight?”

Joseph shook his head. “I don’t know exactly what will happen, but I think we are on the brink of something new. Whether that’s good or bad, I’m not sure.”

“I hope Aiyana brings him to his knees,” Emily said. “And if I have a chance, I’ll help.”

“Why don’t we stick to Raven Mockers for now?”

They both sat cross-legged, too tired to move, despite the fact that their clothes were soaked by the still-wet ground. For months, they had been fighting for this moment, for the time when they would be together without worry. Now, they were together, but Onaconah had robbed them of the hope they both expected to feel.

“So,” Joseph whispered. “What now?”

“You’re asking me?” Emily’s tired laughter ended in a sigh. “Now, we go back to my grandfather’s cabin and sleep for a week. Then, we’ll figure out the rest.”

Emily rested her head against his and pressed a kiss to his temple. Then, his mouth found hers, and they fell back against the damp earth, arms and legs tangled together beneath the night sky.
